Mrs. Steiger Wears Prada

At NewsBios.com, we are always on the hunt for tidbits of information about journalists and their families that we can put under the "Personal" section of our in-depth dossiers.

The goal, as I've always instructed our researchers, is to find those nuggets of personal insight that will leave our clients scratching their heads and asking, "How in the world do they know that."

Well, in that spirit I thought I'd let readers of this site know that Wendy Brandes, wife of The Wall Street Journal's Editor at Large, Paul E. Steiger, favors Prada over all other designers. [View a photo of Wendy]Now that you know this, it will be easy for you to Google "Wendy Brandes" and "Prada" and see where I discovered this particular nugget.

The real trick is finding the nugget in the first place without having to read through every Google post that mentions Paul or Wendy or both.

In more than 15 years of overseeing NewsBios.com, I've learned a lot about finding the "needle in the haystack" of information.

Often the reason people buy our news dossiers is NOT because they can't find information on the journalists we profile.  It is because they find TOO much information on our journalists, and need us to filter the relevant from the spam.

Sometime early next year, I'm planning to conduct a workshop to train PR executives and members of their team on how to get the goods on any journalist.  I'll demonstrate advanced Google techniques, as well as ways to extract key information from both free and paid information web sites.

If you'd be interested in participating in such a workshop -- or have someone at your company/agency who would benefit from this knowledge -- please call me at 1-866-NEWS-070, ext. 707 and give me some ideas on how I can best structure the class.

By the way, if you work near or travel to Los Angeles, you might want to stop by one of the fine jewerly stores that carry Wendy's own designs -- either under her name or the Gigi Caron name.

Wendy, whose background includes jobs at The Wall Street Journal, CNN and People.com, caught the jewerly-designing bug after she created her own engagement and wedding rings.  She and Paul were married on July 23, 2001 at the Tribeca Rooftop in Manhattan.
